ITS BulletWelcome Pages - Purpose and Examples
  • Why have a Welcome Page when you already have a Home Page for your course?
As the name suggests, the page "welcomes" students to your courseware. Unlike a Home Page, which is password-protected, a Welcome Page may be viewed by anyone interested in finding out about your course. So, a Welcome Page is designed as a brief snap shot of your course open to the entire world.
  • What should you include in your Welcome Page?
Students often go through a lot of research before they pick a course. How would you make your course seem attractive to students, at the same time defining the overall purpose and structure of your course? You may want to include the following:

An attractive layout. Think of the page design, background colors and a banner.
Introduce yourself and your course. Have the course title, your name and your contact information. This is really important, as students may want to reach you to know more. It may be a good idea to include your picture.

Outline the course objectives, course goals, and/or course purpose. Try not to feed students to a great deal of information!

Link to your password protected course. Students should be able to access to your course from this welcome page once they have the authorization.

ITS BulletSite Maps - Purpose and Examples

Site maps provide alternative navigation to course content. Site maps are helpful for users and students because they provide an outline to follow in exploring the Web site. They begin with the main page and show what pages are linked to it. Each of those pages has links to other pages. These maps can be textual, images or image maps. However, keep in mind that adding more visuals increases the page load time.

Below are some examples of how a site map might appear, although, the site map menu items are not linked. To better understand the navigational power available through a site map, you can click on the Site Map link on the LOT Web site menu bar. (Use your browser's Back button to return to this page.)
